Many people working in an industry know about the design field’s existence, importance, and technicality. But, many school and college students and their parents are still unaware of it. The younger generation is clueless about it as a career opportunity.

As a designer myself, I believe it is our responsibility to make them more aware and understand the importance of design as a career. I had been thinking about it for a long time and so, I had finally decided to take the responsibility to help them.

I conducted an awareness program in an NGO present at st. Thomas road Chennai. When I stepped into the room and looked at their faces, I was astonished. They were energetic and eager to learn something new. I was so happy looking at them. I proceeded to show slides and explain why to choose design as a career and how it can benefit them in the future.

After completing, I asked them, “Now tell me who all are interested in becoming a designer?” Only 5 of them lifted their hands. Others said they have some other plans for their future, while some said they need time to think about it.

I understood their uncertainty, as they did not have any clear visibility on it yet. So then I continued asking them a question — “What is design?” Everyone shared their perspectives, which was very interesting to me. Then I explained — “Everything is designed. Without design, there is no world.” I illustrated my concept with some examples. I also shared the perspective of “how people got inspired by nature?” and broke some myths that prevail in the design industry.

I presented them with facts, as I wanted them to clearly see how the design industry runs. To help them build their career, I dedicatedly prepared a slide containing information about how to enter the design industry. I spoke about the future of design and how the design industry will play a crucial role in the upcoming improvements. Then finally wrapping up, they asked some questions, and I answered those.

On the whole, It was an excellent interactive session which I thoroughly enjoyed. It gave me a sense of fulfillment. I want to feel the same adrenaline rush again and so I am going to continue doing it. If you think I can be of great help, please do let me know. I would be more than happy to help more youngsters out there. I want many young and bright individuals to join and enrich the industry. That’s my goal.
