I’ll give a short analogy on why customization of portfolios is very important —

Assume you’re going to the gym and you want to build muscles.

You can do it in three ways:

1. First, you can use predefined workouts that are already available. It can be obtained from someone or from YouTube, etc.

2. As a second step, you get to know your body, empathize with it, and customize your workout accordingly.

Due to the fact that the first one is not intended for a specific audience, but rather for a general audience, the second one works better.

3. You can ask a personal trainer for advice. He understands your needs and can customize the workout to your requirements.

If you want to achieve it, you definitely need a customized workout based on your goals.

You may now wonder why I’m giving this example. Let me explain further —

When you apply for a job. The first thing you need to understand is which company you are applying for, and what are going to be your roles and responsibilities and based on the requirements of your job. Based on these requirements you should showcase your portfolio.

You can also do this with the help of mentorship, similar to having a personal trainer customize your workout plan. Your mentor will be able to understand your needs and give you more clarity on what must be done.

The same portfolio won’t work for all the companies. You need to empathize with each role and iterate.

I hope this analogy gives you insight into why you should improve and work toward building and customizing your portfolio!
