Be an outcome designer, not just an output designer
There is a subtle difference that separates output and outcome designers.
It’s their mindset.
Let me explain it in detail. The mindset of an output designer will be like — “I have completed the design, and the client is satisfied with it, my work is done.” But, the mindset of an outcome designer will be focused on the result. They don’t think their work is done even after the design is approved.
They spread their arm and look for:
How does their design work in the real world?
How do people react?
What value and impact does the design create?
This is what differentiates outcome designers from output designers.
Now, plenty of designers have the output designer’s mindset. The result it delivers can be fruitful in the short term. But in the long run, it won’t be that effective to reach your dream.
“Design isn’t just what it looks like and feels like — design is how it works.”
— Steve Jobs
It’s time for designers to change their mindset and think based on the outcome. Measuring your result will emphasize the areas you lack and help you enhance your ability and skill set. Most importantly, it helps you understand more about people and what draws their attention.
This is what will set your trajectory focused toward your end destination by leveling up your skills. So be an outcome designer and not just an output designer.
